Not sure if it fits with this topic but one feature that might encourage a more widespread adoption may be to introduce the option to tag routes with a “seal of quality“ e.g. in the form of a logo of a local walking group.

Another flag could be a temporary closures on a section of a route. Ideally, there would be a volunteer responsible for a cluster of local routes who would monitor them. Not sure if every local authority has an e-mail warning system about similar closures.
