Help shape Good Ways

Share feedback, ideas and feature ideas with us here. This is your place to talk to us and the community to shape Good Ways. There’s no such thing as a silly idea or question!

Searching for Walks

On the organisation pages and individual profiles, you will find hundreds, or eventually thousands, of routes. At the moment you can sort them in various ways or look at them on a map. A text search box where people could look for place names, would also be very useful.

Planned

More stats

It may not be for everyone, but for those more data-inclined, we’re hoping to add a bunch of useful, interesting and downright odd statistics about the routes and journeys near you!

Planned

Personal Heatmap

A heatmap of all the journeys you’ve taken with Good Ways

Planned

How-to guides

A set of FAQs and instructions on how to use the features of Good Ways, including instructional videos and step-by-step guides.

Linking between the app and the website

We’d like to make it as easy as possible to jump between our website and our app. This means things like an ‘Open in app’ button on the website, and an ‘Open in website’ button on the app!

Web designs

Anton is putting the finishing touches on the fantastic website designs (https://goodways.featurebase.app/p/what-do-you-think-of-these-website-designs). Keep your eyes peeled for a refresh of our look.

Planned

Help you to find local features

Help you find or avoid things around your community. This includes things that can improve your journey, like benches and loos, to things that may cause problems like styles, gates and river crossings. This data will primarily come from OSM.

In Progress

Follow and record routes offline

On the app, you will be able to download a route and the map to confidently follow the route offline. Any pictures you take, notes or warnings you leave, and the recording itself will all be uploaded when you next have internet.

Downloadable Maps?

Will the app work in offline mode, like the paid versions of other mapping apps? That could be important if people are to use this as their main walking app.

Auto-route

When creating a route, auto-route saves a lot of time but occasionally prevents a route going a particular way (even if that way is safe and legal). OSMaps is the same. When this happens, turning off auto-route then reverts all waypoint links to straight lines (i.e. it’s auto-route for the whole route or none of it). In OSMaps, the ‘snap’ function only applies pro-spectively not retrospectively during route creation.

What do you think of these website designs?

Anton has been busy improving the design of our website. If you have any thoughts, ideas, struggles or feedback of any sort, please leave a comment below. Map key

It would be helpful to have a key on the routes, and the plan routes pages. Apologies if I've just missed it, but I couldn't find it.

Editing Walks

We can't do this yet, but I just wanted to check that it will be possible to edit walks after you have done them, and before sharing them with other people? Every walk I do needs some editing, where I made a mistake, found a blocked path and retraced or diverted to avoid cattle etc. At the moment, I record on Outdooractive and download to GPX Studio to edit, then upload the edited gpx file back into Outdooractive before making it public. It would be easier if you could do all that within the same app.

Completed

I have just completed a second walk: Avoncliff to Oldfield Park. The app worked well, apart from the issue I have already raised about battery draining (24% in 5 and a half hours, without using it to navigate.)

This time it didn't stop recording. The only confusing part was at the end. I saved it and made some comments, but I can't see those now. I can see it under Travelled as an unnamed activity, although that doesn't show the recorded time, nor does it show the review or comments. When I press on Explore and see a long list of walks, the original plan is there, but not the recorded walk.

Completed

Anonymous Posts

I didn't mean to post the last comments anonymously. As I followed the link from the app, I assumed it would know who I am. These multiple logins can be confusing. Steve Melia

Feedback on Walking With the App

This is looking better than I expected at this stage, but there is clearly still work to do. I created three routes, by importing gpx files created on Outdooractive. That worked fine. I then tried following one, recording it as an Activity. A few comments: 1) The recording stopped at one point. I don't know why. I didn't press stop, but I was switching between apps, using the phone for different things during the walk. I spotted the problem, started re-recording, so the recorded track now has a straight line in it. It would need to be edited. 2) I was able to use it for navigation, although, one serious limitation, at the moment, is that you cannot see what lies underneath the blue line (route) or purple line (activity). Am I on a footpath? Very important. On OS Maps and Outdooractive, you can see what is underneath. 3) I cannot seem to access, edit or download the Activity. Is that something which will be added later? 4) It uses a lot of battery power. I only looked at the screen for a few short periods but it used 23% of my battery over the 8 hours it was running (this was a 17-mile walk) 5) It didn't seem possible to pause the recording, so you have to leave it running during longer stops. This adds to the battery problem and can produce bizarre patterns on the gpx file when you stop, but the gps satellite thinks you are moving.
